Arctic Animals and Adaptations

This will be my last post before the new year! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break!

We have been reading and learning about different Arctic and Antarctic animals and their adaptations. Adaptations are physical and behaviors that the animals have developed to help them survice in their environment.

We have made Arctic animals with facts about their animals.  Below are some pictures of some made by the class!

Reader's Theater November 18, 2011

The class presented their reader's theater play today!  Everyone did a great job!  This year we are practicing our fluency by reading with expression and with appropriate pacing.  One way to practice our fluency is by performing a play!  Below are pictures of our class while they presented.
"Why Mole Lives Underground" is a story about fox who dreams of going to the moon to catch juicy lizards to eat.  Lazy Mole thinks there will be worms on the moon for him to eat, too, so he won't have to work hard at digging them out of the ground. Fox convinces Condor to fly up and attach a rope to the tip of the crescent moon for the animals to climb. As Fox and Mole begin to climb the rope, Mole finds out that climbing the moon is hard work, and he falls back to Earth. Fox works hard to make his dream come true and reaches the moon.  Mole decides to stay on Earth and work hard digging for worms underground.  That is why moles live underground. I loved the expression used during this performance!
"Pecos Bill and Sluefoot Sue" is about an American frontier cowboy named Pecos Bill who is a confident risk-taker able to survie the hardships of westward expansion. The story began when Bill was a baby and fell out of a covered wagon as his family crossed the Pecos River into Texas. He was rescued and raised by coyotes.  Coyote and cowgirl Dixie tells the tale of how Pecos Bill met and then married Sluefoot Sue, the only person who could match Pecos Bill's riding and roping abilities.  We had great costumes for this performance!
"How the Rhino Got Wrinkly Skin" is about Rhino who once had very smooth skin.  He was vain and proud of his beautiful skin.  He was also rude and not respectful. One time when Mongoose and Snake were helping Parsee bake a cake, Rhino ran through Parsee's camp and took the cake.  Eventually, Parsee, Mongoose, and Snake got even. While Rhino was swimming without his skin, Mongoose, Snake, and Parsee poured cake crumbs inside Rhino's skin.  When Rhino put his skin back on he was so itchy he scratched and scratched, which gave his skin wrinkles. Since then, rhinos have always had wrinkly skin.  Great acting in this play!

2 digit x 1 digit multiplication

We have been studying ways to multiply 2-digit x 1-digit numbers.  Multiplication is putting equal groups together to create a product, or answer to a multiplication problem.  Below are several ways to solve 73x8.  Students need to find the way to works for them and they feel comfortable using.

Please continue to practice these types of problems at home!

This is using base tens blocks to draw a picture to solve the problem.  The tens are grouped together to make five one hundreds.  Then there are 6 tens left over to make 60.  After that the ones are put together to make 24.  Finally, the hundreds, tens, and ones are added up together to make 584.

This method is called partial products.  The larger number is made into tens and ones.  Then the 70 and the 3 are both multiplied by 8.  Those answers are then added together to get the final product of 584.

This method is a picture form of the partial products.  The 73 is again broken apart into 70 and 3 at the top of the boxes.  Then the 8 is written on the left side box.  Both 70 and 3 are multiplied by 8.  The answers are then added together to get 584.

We've also talked about multiplication is repeated addition.  Students then add up the numbers to get the answer.  Here the student groups the 3s together and found that four 3s equals 12.  Since there are eight 3s then it is 12+12 to equal a total of 24.  The 2 is then carried over to be in the tens place to add the tens together to equal a total of 584.

Habitats and Ecosystems

We have been studying habitats and ecosytems in science this week.  Everyone in the class researched an animal and then created a habitat for the animal in their triorama.  The habitats we discussed are the pond, tundra, desert, prairie, deciduous forest, rainforest, anarctica, and african savanna.
For more information about habitats, please check out these websites!

Below are the trioramas some of the class created!  Can you identify and describe the habitat in these pictures?

Flying High Assembly - November 3, 2011

We saw a gymnast doing bungee jumps and his partner doing martial arts with weapons to show us how to use them correctly.  He picked three ladies and called them "Sparks Angels." They talked about the ABCs - A is for attitude, B is for behavior, and C is for commitment.  The martial arts man picked three girls and three boys for a friendly competition about who can do the best nunchuck tricks.  The boys won!  It was funny to see the martial arts person teach the gymnast how to use the nunchucks.  The gymnast hit his head with them!  At least they weren't real nunchucks.  The gymnast did back flips, front flips, and tricks.  At the end they had the Sparks Angels pose with the weapons. We had a blast watching them! We can't wait for them to come back next year!

Author Visit - Kate Klise November 1, 2011

We have a great time listening to Kate Klise for her author presentation today!  Kate Klise wrote Dying to Meet You, a book that was a bluebonnet nominee book from last year.  She explained how she comes up with her ideas for her books.  She said that she uses events in her life to create her stories because if all her ideas were made up then it would sound crazy like a dream.  She drew a circle on the white board and explained the writing process that the characters have an "Oh no!!!" moment in their story that is the problem and then it is solved by a lesson or "Ah ha" moment.  We were very luck to have her visit us!  Ask your child what they learned!
Visit her website for more information about the author! http://kateandsarahklise.com/

Gravity Car Experiment

We had a great time creating and experimenting with our gravity cars!  We have been studying gravity in science and learned that gravity is a force that pulls objects towards the Earth.  The class created their cars using everyday items and tested them by rolling them down a ramp.  The car that went the farthest down the ramp was made by Luke and Robert!  Great job to everyone in our class!

Children's Opera Trip

We had a great time at the Children's Opera on Monday, October 24th!  In music class, Mrs. Jones read to the class the story of the Brementown Musicians.  The story is about a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster who were mistreated by their masters and then make a band. Ask your child about their favorite part of the opera! The story can be viewed at: http://www.brementownmusicians.com/flash/story

Another website to view the story is: http://www.brementownmusicians.com/

Frisco History Unit

During the past few weeks, we have been studying the history of Frisco!  We watched a video that told us events that we made into a timeline.  We worked in stations to study a map of the city of Frisco, to learn about the helpful uses of a cowboy's clothing, and we researched meanings of vocabulary of words of items in Frisco's history.  We also had a great time at the Heritage Museum!  Below are pictures of our trip!

Here we got to see how a printing press works!

We got to see what an old car looks like and that the gas was pumped into a tank under the car seat!

Here is a living room from the early years of Frisco.  Notice that there isn't a TV!

Frisco was a cotton town in the early days.  Here is an example of a cotton gin that helps to pull the seeds out of the cotton.

Homework Information

We have started our homework schedule!  This will be what is expected for each night of the week.  If you have a busy schedule, please feel free to do any of these assignments on any day of the week but make sure these assignments are turned in on the due date which is the day after they are assigned.  We have not started guided reading yet, but your child will soon be bringing home reading books to read and use towards the reading log due on Fridays.

Monday – Write spelling words in our planners in a box provided for this week.  This box will be found next to the Friday spaces in the planner.
Tuesday – Practice math facts.  I have several math pages that the students can select from before they leave on Tuesdays.  Several students left with a page today so that is their homework.  If your child doesn’t want to do a page, your child may practice facts using flashcards, math games, or go online to work on math websites such as  http://www.aaamath.com/grade3.html.  If your child decides to do anything that is NOT a page, I need a signed note from you as the parent saying how they practiced math.  Your child may write the note, but it needs a parent initial.  I need some sort of proof that math was practiced and please remember to log this practice on the math log in your child’s homework folder!
Wednesday – Practice spelling.  I have several spelling practice pages your child can choose to use.  If you child works best without a page, I accept a signed parent note about how spelling was practiced at home.  http://www.spellingcity.com/ is a website to practice words or you can make your own flashcards with the words.  Some students last year used a piece of paper and wrote the words 3 times.  Any sort of spelling practice that shows practice for that week’s spelling test is acceptable.
Thursday – Math homework online.  I sent home today a log- in page on how to log into the math homework.  Your child will need to log into www.pearsonsuccessnet.com and enter their school user name and password.  On the right side is a “TO DO” button that they click on before seeing their assignment.  Please know that this can be done any time this week but is due Friday!!!!  This homework can be logged into the math log due that week.
Friday – Reading and Math logs are due!  Please log all the reading and math practiced that week and a parent needs to sign that their child completed the minutes.
